DANKO WASAGU, KEBBI STATE – At least 15 farmers died and three were injured in Waje community, Danko Wasagu Local Government Area, Kebbi State. Unidentified gunmen, suspected bandits, attacked the community. The farmers killed were working on their farms. The area, bordering Niger, Zamfara, and Sokoto states, has faced more armed attacks.
Alhaji Hussaini Aliyu Bena, Danko Wasagu Local Government Chairman, confirmed the deaths. “We are deeply saddened by this senseless act,” Bena said. Residents said attackers entered the community while farmers were working.
Government Offers Condolences, Financial Support
Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris sent a delegation led by his deputy, Umar Tafida, to Waje. The delegation met bereaved families and the District Head of Waje. They conveyed government condolences.
Tafida announced a financial donation to support affected families. He called it “a modest effort by the government to assist the bereaved and the injured during this difficult time.” He also said steps would be taken to improve security so farmers can return to their lands after the farmers killed incident.
Community Leaders Request Urgent Security Measures
The District Head of Waje, Bala Danbaba, acknowledged the government’s support as “timely and impactful.” He stated that financial aid is not enough. He highlighted the area’s vulnerability.
“Our proximity to Niger, Zamfara, and Sokoto makes us an easy target. We urgently need enhanced security at the border points to stop these attacks,” Danbaba said. Other residents supported his call. They asked state and federal governments to deploy more security personnel and intelligence assets to the area.
