Uyo – The spotlight turns to Akwa Ibom State as the MTN CHAMPS Uyo Grand Final kicks off today, May 6. Running through May 9 at the impressive Godswill Akpabio Stadium, the event gathers 2,187 young athletes from 136 schools. This includes 40 standout Most Valuable Performers (MVPs) identified during earlier rounds in Benin and Lagos, all ready to compete at MTN CHAMPS Uyo.
High Hopes for Youth Athletics
Officials gathered yesterday to formally launch the finals. Akwa Ibom’s Commissioners for Sports (Paul Bassey) and Education (Prof Ubong Essien Umoh) joined dignitaries like NSSF President Mrs Olabisi Joseph and key figures from MTN and event partner Making of Champions (MoC).
MTN’s Emamoke Ogoro shared the vision behind Nigeria’s largest school athletics event. “The dream of having Nigeria on the world stage is a strong vision,” she stated, noting the program has involved over 15,000 students since 2023. “Looking into grassroots development is a fulcrum of pivoting all our youngsters to pursue their dreams.”
Platform for Nigeria’s Future Stars
MoC’s Deji Ogeyingbo emphasised the goal of providing opportunities nationwide through MTN CHAMPS Uyo and similar events. “Every Nigerian child deserves this opportunity,” he said, praising the state for maintaining the world-class stadium facilities.
Representing the Governor, Commissioner Bassey confirmed Akwa Ibom’s enthusiastic support. He highlighted the state’s belief in youth development and revealed plans for a new sports academy. “It’s not only enough to discover those talents; they must be nurtured,” Bassey explained, underlining the importance of education alongside sports. The state wholeheartedly backs the MTN CHAMPS Uyo finals.
