KAIAMA, KWARA STATE – A boat accident in Kwara State killed 27 passengers. The passengers were returning from a market in Niger State. This is another Kwara boat tragedy. The accident occurred three nights ago. Overloading and poor weather are believed causes.
A survivor said, “The boat was meant for 100 people, but it’s often loaded with up to 300 passengers.” The survivor described the situation during stormy weather. This accident follows a similar one seven months ago in Gbajibo community where over 100 people died.
Local Government to Enforce Safety Rules After Kwara Boat Tragedy
Abdullah Danladi, Chairman of Kaiama Local Government, confirmed the incident. He expressed sorrow and said the government will address such disasters.
“This nearly yearly tragedy must stop. We are setting up a committee to enforce life jacket use and ban night travel,” Danladi said. He made this statement during a visit to victims’ families. He emphasized the need for strict boat safety protocol enforcement.
Emir Urges Safety Education for Water Travel
The Emir of Kaiama, His Royal Highness Muazu Umar, expressed concern. He said he will start awareness campaigns on water travel safety. “People must understand the risks of violating safety rules. We will not relent in sensitizing both operators and passengers,” the Emir stated. He called for collective responsibility to prevent more deaths. The recurring Kwara boat tragedy requires this action.
