40 Killed in Latest Attack Amid Rising Violence in Plateau State

JOS, Plateau State – Assailants killed 40 people in an attack on the Zike community in Plateau State early Monday morning, marking another deadly incident in the region.

The attack occurred in Kimakpa, Kwall district, within the Bassa Local Government Area.

Attackers reportedly opened fire as residents tried to flee after hearing gunshots, community leader Wakili Tongwe told Channels Television via phone.

Tongwe stated he was patrolling elsewhere with vigilantes and security personnel during the assault.

Security forces eventually responded and repelled the attackers, but significant loss of life had already occurred.

Reports confirm 36 people died at the scene, while four more died later from their injuries.

Several other residents suffered gunshot wounds and are receiving medical treatment.

Official statements from security agencies regarding the incident are still pending.

This violence follows a pattern of recent attacks in Plateau State. Less than two weeks ago, 52 people were killed in a similar attack in Bokkos Local Government Area.

The state has faced recurring violence, often linked to farmer-herder disputes and land issues. Major attacks killed around 200 people during Christmas 2023 and 40 people in Wase last May.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftwang recently characterized the ongoing killings as acts of terrorism and potential genocide, suggesting they extend beyond simple resource conflicts.

The Governor also stated that armed groups have seized control of 64 communities across the state.

In response to this latest tragedy, Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police has ordered the immediate deployment of tactical police units to the affected areas.
