Speaker Calls for Urgent Action on National Food Insecurity Crisis

Abuja – House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas issued a strong call to action, urging Nigeria’s lawmakers to tackle the nation’s growing food insecurity crisis. He emphasized that hunger and malnutrition are critical issues affecting many Nigerians.

Abbas didn’t mince words: “Nigeria’s problem is largely, in a way, food insecurity… Any steps we, as parliamentarians, can take to ease the burden of hunger and malnutrition will be a tremendous service to this country.”

Lawmakers Rise to the Challenge

Abbas praised the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, led by Hon. Chike Okafor, for their proactive work. He highlighted the committee’s surprisingly rapid success, noting that state and local governments have already adopted their key initiatives. “I was genuinely shocked when I heard Hon. Chike Okafor detail the progress made in just a year and a half,” Abbas admitted. “It’s truly unprecedented.”

The National Legislative Network on Nutrition and Food Security, headed by Hon. Michael Tolulope Ige, is also playing a vital role. This group is expanding the fight against food insecurity to state and local levels and is organizing a national summit to address the crisis. Both Okafor and Ige expressed their gratitude for Abbas’s strong support, with Ige acknowledging the Speaker’s effective leadership appointments.
