Lagos – Nigerian rapper and lawyer Folarin Falana, known as Falz, opposes President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision regarding Rivers State. President Tinubu declared a State of Emergency there.
On Tuesday, the President announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly in a nationwide broadcast. Tinubu appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as Administrator to govern the state for six months.
Falz Questions Legality
Falz, on his X handle, questioned the President’s actions. He argued that no law allows a president to suspend a sitting governor. “A Governor is elected into office and may only be removed by impeachment,” he wrote.
The rapper emphasized that a governor can only be removed through legal process, not by executive order. Falz also questioned if the situation in Rivers State justified a State of Emergency. He asked, “Is Rivers State at war? Is there an ‘actual breakdown of public order?’ Is there a threat to the existence of the federation?”
His comments highlight public debate over the President’s decision and its implications for democracy and governance in Nigeria. The legality of governor suspension is at issue.
