Katsina – Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating Nigeria has regressed since Tinubu took office. In an interview, El-Rufai criticizes Tinubu, accusing the government of incompetence and favouritism and straying from the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) original principles. El-Rufai, now affiliated with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), made these remarks to Deutsche Welle Hausa.
Security and Economic Concerns Raised
El-Rufai contends Nigeria is in a worse state now than under previous governments, citing security and economic decline. “Ever since the assumption of office of Tinubu as Nigeria’s president, the country has begun to go backwards,” he said. He pointed to rising insecurity, a faltering economy, increased poverty, and heightened ethnic tensions. These issues are central to why El-Rufai criticizes Tinubu’s performance.
Nepotism Allegations Surface
El-Rufai also targeted the administration’s appointment practices, alleging nepotism. He claimed personal ties and ethnicity are prioritized over merit. “Whoever he is giving an appointment to must be someone he knows or from his tribe,” El-Rufai asserted, implying favouritism influences staffing decisions within the government, which operates under the Nigerian Constitution. His comments raise questions about inclusivity and competence in federal appointments.
