Vatican City – Vatican Announces Death of Pope Francis
The Vatican announced on Monday: Pope Francis dies at 88 years old. The announcement came one day after his Easter Sunday appearance at Saint Peter’s Square. Cardinal Kevin Farrell confirmed the death in an official statement. The Vatican published this statement on its Telegram channel.
Cardinal Farrell stated, “Dearest brothers and sisters, it is with deep sorrow that I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.” He added, “This morning at 7:35 am (0535 GMT) the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His church.” This statement confirmed the pontiff’s death.
Death Followed Recent Illness
The death of Pope Francis occurred after a serious illness. He appeared on the Saint Peter’s Basilica balcony on Easter Sunday. He waved to crowds while recovering. Earlier this year, Pope Francis had pneumonia. This illness required a 38-day hospital stay. He was released from the hospital on March 23. During his Easter “Urbi et Orbi” blessing, Pope Francis wished people “Happy Easter.” He also spoke about freedom of thought and tolerance.
