Taichung, Taiwan — A gas explosion ripped through a Taichung department store on Thursday, killing at least five people and injuring 20. The blast occurred on the 12th floor of the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store, notably in a food court area that was under construction.
The tremendous explosion caused serious damage to the building, throwing debris onto the street below. Taiwan’s National Fire Agency confirmed the evacuation of 235 people from the building and surrounding area. The Taichung Fire Department responded immediately, dispatching nearly 130 firefighters to manage the situation.
Local media stated the force of the gas explosion drove four individuals out of 12th-floor windows.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te made a statement offering his sympathies to the victims and their families. He acknowledged that the Ministry of Health and Welfare is “actively coordinating medical resources” to guarantee the injured receive the best possible care. President Lai also ordered a speedy and comprehensive investigation. “Relevant departments [must] clarify the cause of the accident as soon as possible,” he remarked.
