Taichung, Taiwan — A gas explosion ripped through a Taichung department store on Thursday, killing at least five people and injuring 20. The blast occurred on the 12th floor of the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store, notably in a food court area that was under construction.
The tremendous explosion caused serious damage to the building, throwing debris onto the street below. Taiwan’s National Fire Agency confirmed the evacuation of 235 people from the building and surrounding area. The Taichung Fire Department responded immediately, dispatching nearly 130 firefighters to manage the situation.
