Pope Francis Burial Site Breaks Vatican Tradition

Vatican City – Pope Francis chose burial outside the traditional Vatican grottoes. The pontiff, who died on Easter Monday, requested burial at the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. This choice for the Pope Francis burial site differs from recent papal practice.

His will specified a simple tomb in the earth within the basilica. The basilica is located miles from the Vatican. The only requested inscription is “Franciscus.”

Why Santa Maria Maggiore for Pope Francis’ Burial Site?

The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore was important to Pope Francis. He visited it before and after international trips and after hospital stays to pray before the Salus Populi Romani icon.

He announced his burial plans in December 2023, citing a “very strong connection” to the basilica. “I want to be buried in Santa Maria Maggiore… Because it is my great devotion,” Francis said, explaining his choice for the burial site.

Simple Tomb Within Historic Basilica

Pope Francis requested a simple tomb. The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is a major papal basilica in Rome with noted art and architecture, including mosaics and a gilded ceiling. He often prayed there, particularly showing devotion to the Virgin Mary.

His funeral is on Saturday in St. Peter’s Square. Afterward, his body will be taken to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore for burial, the chosen Pope Francis burial site.
