The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) seized millions of naira worth of expired drugs during a raid in Umumeje village, Osisioma Ngwa area, Abia State. The agency discovered a large-scale operation repackaging and reselling expired medications.
NAFDAC found the illegal operation near the Ariaria International Market. The operation involved multiple buildings. Workers there relabeled and changed expiration dates on expired drugs. NAFDAC stated that the seized items included expired potassium chloride, allergy medications, immune boosters, and cholesterol treatments. The agency also found machines used for altering expiry dates.
Police arrested several individuals linked to the operation. The prime suspect, however, is still at large.
NAFDAC worked with security agencies on this raid. This action is part of the federal government’s effort to stop fake drugs in Nigeria.
NAFDAC declared its commitment to removing substandard and fake drugs from Nigeria. The agency is reviewing its laws. It plans to impose stricter penalties on those involved in producing and distributing dangerous pharmaceuticals. NAFDAC’s goal is to reduce fake and substandard medicines to no more than 5% prevalence in Nigeria by 2025. The distribution of these types of expired drugs presented significant health risks.
