YABATECH Transformation: Tinubu Approves University Status

President Bola Tinubu has approved the transformation of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) into a university. Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa announced the decision during a visit to the institution on Friday.

“President Bola Tinubu quickly approved the transformation when I discussed it with him,” Alausa said. He confirmed YABATECH’s readiness, noting its large number of staff with doctorate degrees.

Alausa praised YABATECH for its commitment to excellence. He said the federal government will support the institution’s growth, particularly in technology and innovation.

The Minister stated that the current administration prioritizes technical and vocational education. He said entrepreneurship will also be a focus, aiming to combat the “Japa Syndrome” (emigration of skilled workers). Nigeria neglected technical and vocational training for over 30 years, Alausa noted, but that is now changing. He referenced the incorporation of TVET in european education.

YABATECH Rector Dr. Ibrahim Abdul expressed gratitude for the approval. He reiterated that the college, with over 200 PhD holders on staff, is well-prepared for university status.

A bill formalizing the transformation will be sent to the National Assembly for passage and Presidential assent.
