Sevilla striker scores in first Super Eagles appearance during 2026 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho
Maseru, Lesotho – Sevilla striker Akor Adams joined an exclusive club of Nigerian players by scoring on his debut for the Super Eagles in their 2-1 victory over Lesotho during Friday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.
Adams Makes Immediate Impact for Nigeria
It took the 25-year-old forward just 17 minutes on the pitch to find the back of the net. Adams doubled Nigeria’s lead in the second half, coolly finishing off a pass from captain Victor Osimhen.
The goal appears to have vindicated head coach Eric Chelle’s decision to hand him his international debut, though in fairness, Adams had been making a strong case for himself at club level. Days before joining the national team, he scored in Sevilla’s surprising 4-1 LaLiga win over Barcelona, a result that likely caught the attention of Nigerian football officials monitoring European-based talent.
Rare Company in Nigerian Football History
With his goal against Lesotho, Adams became only the sixth player in Nigerian football history to score on his first senior international appearance. It’s a small club, but an impressive one.
Julius Aghahowa was the first to pull off this feat during the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations, finding the net in Nigeria’s final group match against Morocco. Obafemi Martins did it in May 2004, scoring on his debut in a friendly against Ireland.
The full list also includes Ekigho Ehiosun, Stephen Ayo Makinwa, and Femi Opabunmi. All made instant impressions wearing the green and white of the three-time African champions.
World Cup Qualification Still the Main Goal
Friday’s win keeps Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualification campaign moving in the right direction. The Super Eagles are desperate to return to football’s biggest stage after the disappointment of missing Qatar 2022.

Adams’ arrival gives Coach Chelle more options in attack. He now has another scoring threat alongside established stars like Osimhen and Ademola Lookman. What may prove most valuable is Adams’ apparent ability to deliver in high-pressure moments, something he’s shown at both club and international level, though it’s still early days.
From Spain to the Super Eagles
The striker’s rise to the national team happened quickly. His performances in La Liga over recent months caught eyes back home, and Nigerian officials had reportedly been tracking him for potential call-ups.
At 6’3″, Adams adds something different to Nigeria’s attack, physicality and aerial strength that could be useful in tight qualifying matches. His link-up play with Osimhen against Lesotho was encouraging, suggesting their partnership might have legs.
Whether Adams can maintain this scoring form and become a regular fixture in the Super Eagles lineup remains to be seen. Nigeria’s next World Cup qualifier will offer a clearer picture.
