Nigeria Fights Child Labour with New Digital Platform

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian government, partnering with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), launched a new digital platform today to combat child labour. The platform includes a national website and a reporting app designed for real-time reporting and response to child labour cases nationwide.

The ILO reports that 24.6 million Nigerian children, aged five to 17, are involved in child labour. This figure represents the highest number in Africa. The new digital platform offers a way to report cases immediately.

At the launch event, ILO Director General, Gilbert Houngbo, said the initiative is “a bold step…in launching this data platform to bridge the gap towards knowledge, knowledge sharing and referrals.” He praised Nigeria’s commitment but stated that eliminating child labour needs cooperation from parents, teachers, and communities.

Nigeria’s Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi (represented by Minister of State, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha), stated that millions of Nigerian children are still at risk, despite previous efforts. The digital platform provides a central location for instant child labour reports, enabling quick action by authorities.

Dr. Usman Salihu Aminu, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, thanked stakeholders for their contributions to the website’s launch. This marks a significant step forward to reduce and prevent child labour in Nigeria.
