Lagos, Nigeria – Omoyele Sowore, 2023 presidential candidate for the African Action Congress, experienced an attack at the Lagos City Marathon on Saturday. Assailants, described as thugs, targeted Sowore, making the incident, where Sowore was attacked at the Lagos City Marathon, a major disruption.
The attackers also targeted members of Sowore’s media team and journalists covering the marathon. The incident resulted in injuries and the destruction of cameras and other equipment.
Video footage shows the assailants physically assaulting Sowore, his crew, and journalists. One assailant is seen grabbing a journalist’s neck. The attack is raising questions about security at public events, and many ask why Sowore was attacked at the Lagos City Marathon.
Officials have not yet identified the assailants. The motive for the attack is currently unknown.
The attack prompted widespread condemnation. Many are demanding a thorough investigation.
Separately, at the same event, Sowore occupied the seat designated for Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Security personnel and dignitaries persuaded Sowore to leave the area. It is not appropriate to give my opinion regarding this situation.
