ABUJA – Young Nigerians looking to gain practical skills have a significant new opportunity. The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has expanded its student loan program. This expansion now includes vocational and technical training centres across Nigeria. The move will help many youths build careers in skilled trades. The NELFUND vocational loan is central to this empowering initiative.
Iyal Mustapha, NELFUND’s Executive Director of Operations, shared the news. He spoke during a sensitisation tour in Enugu. The NELFUND team visited key institutions. These included the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT). They also saw the Enugu College of Education Technical and the MSME Clinics Fashion and Garment Hub.
“This initiative is designed to finance youths pursuing careers in skilled trades like fashion design,” Mustapha stated clearly. He emphasized the practical support offered.
The loan package is comprehensive. It will cover training fees. Importantly, it also provides stipends for living costs and essential starter tools for new graduates. This support helps beneficiaries begin their careers successfully.
Enugu: A Model for Vocational Loan Success
Enugu State is a key pilot state for the NELFUND vocational loan. Mustapha highlighted Enugu’s excellent preparation and strong training infrastructure. This makes it a model for other states.
“We’ve already launched the scheme in over ten states, but Enugu stands out for its commitment and quality of centres,” Mustapha observed. His comments came during a tour of the vibrant Fashion and Garment Hub in Enugu.
The application portal for the NELFUND vocational loan will be accessible soon. Aspiring trainees will apply and then be directed to accredited training centres.
Mustapha also detailed the financial aspects. “Training costs will depend on each centre’s fee structure, and transportation allowances will be factored into the loan,” he explained. Enthusiastic Welcome from Enugu Stakeholders
Leaders in Enugu have warmly welcomed the program. They see great potential for youth development.
Arinze Chilo-Offiah is the Special Adviser to the Enugu Governor on Digital Economy and SME Development. He confirmed the state’s readiness. “Our fashion hub is ready, with 150 industrial sewing machines and room for up to 500 trainees,” Chilo-Offiah said. He expressed confidence that Enugu will fully utilize the scheme.
Mrs. Patricia Nwanneka, Acting Registrar of IMT, also shared her optimism. “With more awareness, students will embrace this opportunity. IMT will continue promoting the programme beyond the campaign,” Nwanneka affirmed.
This initiative represents a positive step. It aims to close unemployment gaps. It will empower Nigeria’s growing population of skilled and ambitious youth with NELFUND vocational loan support.
