Benue State Attacks: Over 20 Killed, Toddler Among Victims

MAKURDI – Fresh Benue State attacks have left more than 20 people dead. A two-year-old child is among the victims. The deadly violence occurred in Aondana and nearby communities in Gwer West Local Government Area. Council Chairman Ormin Torsar Victor confirmed these tragic events. His emotional statements highlight deep frustration.

Council Chairman Decries Security Lapses

Ormin Torsar Victor, the Gwer West Council Chairman, spoke out in a video. He questioned the recurring bloodshed near a military installation. “Very close to a military base. What is the meaning of this?” Victor lamented, referring to Tewa Biana, one of the villages hit. He expressed his despair, saying, “If they cannot help me, maybe I’ll leave this position as chairman and let it continue the way it is.” The Gwer West killings latest has shocked the community.

Villages Burn, Security Reportedly Absent

Despite the attacks happening near a military base, security agencies reportedly did not respond. Chairman Torsar criticized this inaction. He pointed to the federal government’s control over engaging assailants. “They say the local security doesn’t have the mandate to engage these people, that only the federal government can give that mandate. So should my people continue to die while we wait?” he asked. The chairman described a mass burial for victims, including a father and his two sons. “I don’t care about being chairman anymore. Look at a child of two years old butchered—it’s too much for me to condone,” Victor stated, visibly shaken by the Aondana massacre.

Attacks Strike Politically Important Area

The violence in Aondana has raised greater concerns. The village holds significant political and historical importance. Chairman Torsar noted its ties to prominent figures. These include Mrs. Eunice Ortom, the former First Lady of Benue State, and Bishop Banagbe. “This is the village of the Tugwe. This is the village of Bishop Banagbe. Whatever will happen, will happen. I don’t know what to do anymore,” he said, his voice filled with emotion. Local leaders and residents are now grappling with immense grief and little outside support.
