IWO, OSUN STATE – The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, stated he wants to be called the “Alaafin of Iwo.” He made this known during a royal visit at his Iwo palace. The Oluwo said the Alaafin title is supreme in Yorubaland. This indicates his intention for an Oluwo new title.
During a visit from the new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, the Oluwo said, “Henceforth, I will also want to be called Alaafin of Iwo and we will inform the government about it.” He added, “I don’t know any other title in Yorubaland that is superior to the Alaafin. Alaafin will continue to be Alaafin because that is the title that Oramiyan adopted and I will also adopt the saying.” This statement clarifies his desire for an Oluwo new title.
Royal Visit Strengthens Ties
The Oluwo praised the new Alaafin’s humility and vision. He predicted peace and development for Oyo under Oba Owoade. The Oluwo noted the historical and cultural links between Iwo and Oyo. He said the Alaafin’s visit would deepen these relations. “With the humility and exposure of the Alaafin, Oyo will witness peace and unprecedented development,” Oluwo said. He stated the good relationship between Iwo and Oyo will grow, reinforcing shared heritage.
Alaafin Notes Strong Historical Bonds
Alaafin Owoade thanked the Oluwo for his support. He recalled, “Even when my name was mentioned as Alaafin-elect, Oluwo called to congratulate me. It is also good to come around to pay him a courtesy visit.” The Alaafin stressed maintaining the historical bond between Iwo and Oyo. He said his predecessor, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, had close ties with Iwo. Oba Owoade urged Iwo’s chiefs to support the Oluwo openly. This would foster regional unity and growth. The discussion about the Oluwo new title happened during this visit.
