FG Declares June 12 a Public Holiday for Democracy Day

ABUJA – The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday to celebrate this year’s Democracy Day. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this on behalf of the government.

In a statement, the minister said, “June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign and peace is sustained and our future assured.” The statement was issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.

26 Years of Uninterrupted Civil Rule

This year’s event marks 26 years of continuous civilian governance in Nigeria. The minister called this milestone symbolic of the nation’s strength. The June 12 public holiday is to commemorate this achievement.

“The last 26 years tells the story of our resilience, strength and courage and a hope renewed than ever,” Tunji-Ojo stated, emphasizing the importance of remaining on a democratic path.

Commitment to Democratic Values Reaffirmed

The minister also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to democratic principles, stating the administration aligns with the will of the people.

“Democracy is sustained with open doors for further improvement,” he noted. He pledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope government will continue to support a system based on free expression and the democratic determination of Nigeria’s future.
