The National Judicial Council (NJC) has rejected a recommendation from the Benue State House of Assembly to remove Justice Ikpambese as the state’s Chief Judge. The NJC announced Tuesday that Justice Ikpambese will remain in his position while it investigates allegations against him.
The Benue State House of Assembly voted on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, to remove Justice Ikpambese. Speaker Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh led the session, where 23 members supported the removal. The Assembly cited accusations of abuse of office, financial mismanagement, political interference, industrial incitement, and favoritism.
NJC spokesperson Kemi Ogedengbe confirmed that Justice Ikpambese would continue as Chief Judge during a “comprehensive investigation.” The NJC stated its commitment to due process.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) criticized the Assembly’s resolution. NBA President Afam Osigwe (SAN) and General Secretary Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara released a joint statement. The NBA said the removal attempt violated constitutional procedures and threatened judicial integrity. They emphasized that removing a judge must strictly follow legal rules.
The NJC’s investigation will determine the accuracy of the claims against Justice Ikpambese and decide the next steps. The situation has drawn national attention to the process of judicial accountability in Nigeria.
