ESUT Suspends Lecturers, Student in Grade Fraud Scandal

Enugu, Nigeria – Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has suspended three lecturers and one student for alleged grade fraud. The university announced the indefinite suspensions today, following a disciplinary committee report.

The suspended lecturers are Dr. Ezugwu Samuel Ndubuisi (Anatomy), Dr. Ugwuishi Emeka (Physiology), and Dr. Nwafor Charles (Physiology). ThankGod Chinonso Obi, a Medical Laboratory Science student, was also suspended for allegedly assisting the lecturers.

The ESUT College of Medicine (ESUCOM) Disciplinary Committee investigated claims of extortion and grade alteration. The committee’s findings led to the suspensions, effective January 23, 2025. The case will now go to the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee for further review.

A university source stated that Obi, a class representative, allegedly collected money from students on behalf of the lecturers. Students were reportedly told they had failed or received low grades, and payment was required for grade improvement. The source also reported that, “complaints started pouring in”.

The university’s Public Relations Department confirmed the suspensions. The ongoing investigation should cause concern. Further action by the university is pending the final report. Further grade fraud investigations are likely.
