Health officials sound alarm as cholera, dengue fever, and yellow fever cases surge across 34 states.
Abuja, Nigeria – Five infectious diseases are spreading across Nigeria. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) confirmed Saturday that cholera, dengue fever, Mpox, diphtheria, and yellow fever have created a public health emergency.
Cholera Hits 34 States, Zamfara Worst Affected
Cholera has spread to 34 states, with Zamfara recording 32% of all cases. Bayelsa, Adamawa, Delta, Lagos, and Rivers states also report cases.
Cholera spreads through contaminated water and food. The disease causes severe dehydration and can kill within hours without treatment.
“The situation demands heightened vigilance and intensified response efforts from all stakeholders,” the NCDC stated.
Yellow Fever and Dengue Fever Spread
Yellow fever cases appear in six states: Abia, Anambra, Edo, Ekiti, Lagos, and Rivers. Edo State confirmed dengue fever cases.
Both diseases show symptoms similar to malaria. This leads to wrong diagnosis and delayed treatment.
“The yellow fever vaccine remains the most effective prevention strategy,” the NCDC said.
Prevention Steps
The NCDC released prevention guidelines:
Remove standing water from containers and gutters. Sleep under treated bed nets. Use mosquito repellents during dawn and dusk. Wash hands with soap and clean water. Get proper medical testing for fever symptoms.
Health System Response
Healthcare facilities increased surveillance and report suspected cases to state authorities immediately. The rainy season creates more mosquito breeding sites and contaminates water sources.
Local communities are buying water purification tablets and mosquito nets. Markets and schools have started basic hygiene measures.
The NCDC called for urgent national action to control the outbreaks. Government agencies, healthcare workers, and citizens must work together to reduce disease spread.
