Niger State Road Crash 12 Killed, Families Mourn

AGAIE, NIGER STATE – Twelve people were killed and three seriously injured in a head-on road crash in Agaie, Niger State, over the weekend. The collision involved a bus carrying 15 passengers and a trailer.

Eyewitnesses reported the trailer driver was overtaking recklessly when the accident occurred. Habibu Wushishi, Director of Media and Strategy at the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, confirmed the fatalities, noting three of the deceased were from the same family.

“Three passengers, including the driver, [suffered] injuries and were rushed to the general hospital in Lapai,” Wushishi stated.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), and the police, along with local residents, conducted rescue operations. The bodies of the deceased were recovered from the scene.

Alhaji Adamu Aliyu Muhammad, a former Commissioner for Information and ex-Permanent Commissioner of the Civil Service Commission, lost two wives and two children in the road crash.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago expressed his condolences, calling the accident “sad and unfortunate.”

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Bago extended sympathies to the Barwan Agaie and the families of all victims. He offered words of comfort and shared in their grief.

“I encourage the Barwan Agaie and families of other deceased victims to look up to Allah alone to come out of this difficult moment,” he said.

Bago also prayed for the swift recovery of the injured. The deadly road crash highlights ongoing safety concerns on Nigerian roads.
