Free Gemini Code Assist: AI Coding Help

Google launched Gemini Code Assist for Individuals, a free AI coding assistant, on Tuesday. This new tool offers code completion and assistance to developers, directly competing with existing services like GitHub’s Copilot. The free version boasts significantly higher usage limits than competitors.

Gemini Code Assist for Individuals integrates with popular coding environments like VS Code and JetBrains. It supports various programming languages. Developers can use a chat interface to interact with Google’s AI model, which can analyze and edit their code. The AI can fix bugs, complete code sections, and explain existing code.

Google’s AI uses a coding-optimized version of the Gemini 2.0 model. The free plan provides 180,000 code completions per month. Also, it gives 240 chat requests per day. The AI model features a 128,000-token context window, enabling it to process larger codebases in a single prompt.

Developers can sign up for the free public preview now.

Google also released Gemini Code Assist for GitHub. This tool automatically reviews code in GitHub, identifies bugs, and provides suggestions.

These releases mark Google’s increased competition with Microsoft and GitHub in the developer tools market. Ryan Salva, former head of GitHub Copilot, leads Google’s developer tooling efforts.

Salva stated to TechCrunch that the free Gemini Code Assist aims to attract developers early in their careers. Google anticipates some users will later upgrade to paid enterprise plans.

Google has offered a business version of Gemini Code Assist for approximately one year. Enterprise tiers include features like audit logs and integration with other services. In December, Google announced integrations with third-party tools, including GitLab and GitHub.
