Supreme Court Nullifies Rivers State Local Government Election

The Supreme Court has ruled the local government election in Rivers State, held on October 5, 2024, as invalid.

The election, won by the All Peoples Party (APP), was illegal. Justice Jamilu Tukur said the Rivers State Electoral Commission did not meet the requirements. The council poll violated Section 150 of the Electoral Act 2022.

This decision follows an earlier Federal High Court ruling in Abuja. That court stopped INEC from giving voter registers to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC). This was to prevent the October 5, 2024, local government election. The court also stopped the police and DSS from providing security.

The judgment stated that RSIEC did not follow the laws. This included giving a 90-day notice before the local government election date.

The Supreme Court’s decision cancels the  election results. This will likely have a large impact on politics in Rivers State.
