Anambra Nurses Protest: Is Neglect Hurting Patient Care?

Awka – Anambra nurses have taken to the streets, demanding better working conditions. But what does this mean for patient care in the state? The nurses, represented by the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), say they’re stretched too thin and underpaid, impacting their ability to provide quality care in government-run hospitals.

The frustrated nurses met at their residential quarters in Okpuno, their voices echoing with a shared sense of urgency. They’re counting on their state leadership to carry their message to the government. Are these concerns falling on deaf ears?

Can Underpaid Nurses Provide Adequate Care?

The biggest sticking point? A poorly implemented salary structure (CONHESS). The nurses claim they receive the lowest pay compared to neighboring states.

“We’re barely making ends meet,” one nurse passionately stated. “How can we focus on saving lives when we’re struggling to feed our families?”

Another pointed to the dire conditions within the hospitals. “Imagine trying to care for 80 patients in a ward meant for 20. It’s chaos! Patients aren’t getting the attention they deserve.” What are the long-term consequences of such overcrowding and understaffing?

Adding insult to injury, the hazard allowance sits at a paltry N3,000 – a far cry from the statutory N30,000. The nurses are pleading with the Commissioner for Health to step in. Is anyone listening? Are patients suffering as a result of this neglect?

A Promise of Action: Will It Be Enough?

Mrs. Edith Onwuka, the NANNM state chairperson, promised to relay the nurses’ grievances to the government.

She urged patience, revealing a scheduled meeting with relevant authorities. But will this meeting translate into meaningful change?

She expressed optimism, emphasizing the leadership’s commitment to improving nurse welfare across the state. But can promises alone fix a system that seems to be failing those on the front lines of healthcare? The people of Anambra are waiting to see if this protest will lead to real improvements in patient care.
