Abubakar Lawal Death-Nigeria Demands Answers in Uganda

Nigeria’s Federal Government is demanding a full investigation into the death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda. Lawal, who played for Vipers Sports Club, died Monday morning after falling from a Kampala shopping mall.

Authorities report that Lawal fell from the third floor of the Voicemall Shopping Arcade. He was pronounced dead at Entebbe Referral Hospital.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) called the death “pathetic and suspicious.” NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa stated, “We demand a thorough investigation and no cover-up at all.”

Ambassador Shama Shanga, Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Uganda, has also requested a complete autopsy and full transparency.

Ugandan police reports say Lawal visited his friend, Omary Naima, at the mall. Naima, a Tanzanian national, reportedly left Lawal in her room to go to a nearby game center. Shortly after, around 8:00 am, Lawal fell from the balcony.

Police recovered Lawal’s belongings, including two phones, shoes, and a training kit. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses.

The Nigerian government promises to seek justice for Abubakar Lawal. “The Nigerian government will ensure and demand a thorough and transparent investigation,” Dabiri-Erewa said.

The government also sent condolences to Lawal’s family.
