Kaduna – African Development Bank (AfDB) President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina thanked former President Muhammadu Buhari for backing during a visit to Buhari’s Kaduna home. Adesina expressed gratitude for the crucial Buhari’s support at key moments in his career.
Adesina noted Buhari’s help during his initial AfDB nomination and the 2020 re-election campaign. “He strongly stood by me in difficult times, which ensured my re-election,” Adesina stated. He acknowledged this Buhari’s support was vital for overcoming political challenges.
Navigating Political Transitions
Adesina explained his nomination came under President Goodluck Jonathan. The later government change created uncertainty about his candidacy. Adesina shared that a foreign official noted his vulnerability after Jonathan left office. He contacted the newly elected President Buhari, who offered reassurance. “President Buhari assured me of his support,” Adesina recalled, highlighting the importance of Buhari’s support across party lines.
Support Based on Merit
Former President Buhari praised Adesina’s professional work. He stated his backing was based on merit, not political ties. “I always look at people as Nigerians… I support them on their merit,” Buhari said. “I saw a competent Nigerian doing great work.” Their meeting showed mutual respect and focus on national progress.
