AGF on Simon Ekpa Extradition: No Moves Yet

Abuja – Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, has denied reports that the Federal Government has started Simon Ekpa extradition proceedings. Ekpa is a factional leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). A statement on Friday from Fagbemi’s Special Assistant on Communication, Kamarudeen Ogundele, said the AGF’s comments at an Abuja meeting were misrepresented. “The report is untrue and a complete departure from what the AGF said,” Ogundele stated.

Nigeria Liaising with Finland on Ekpa

Attorney General Fagbemi explained the government’s position. He said Nigeria is communicating with Finnish authorities. These talks aim to ensure Simon Ekpa is held accountable for his actions. Ekpa currently faces trial in Finland on charges filed by the Finnish government. “The Nigerian government had been engaging with Finnish authorities to ensure that Simon Ekpa is held accountable for his actions,” Fagbemi confirmed. This indicates diplomatic discussion, not immediate Simon Ekpa extradition plans.

Finland Trial Outcome Awaited

The Nigerian government will decide its next steps regarding Ekpa after his trial in Finland ends. Any future decisions, including those related to a potential Simon Ekpa extradition, depend on the Finnish court’s findings. Currently, cooperation with Finnish authorities on Ekpa’s trial is the priority.

Media Advised to Ensure Accuracy

Attorney General Fagbemi urged the media to exercise caution. He advised news outlets to report carefully on this sensitive issue and to avoid publishing speculative claims. “The AGF appeals to the media to be circumspect and avoid reporting speculations on the sensitive matter,” the statement added, highlighting the need for factual reporting.
