Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a defamation lawsuit against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, seeking N100.3 billion in damages. Akpoti-Uduaghan initiated legal action following statements made regarding her recent challenge to a Senate seat reassignment.
The lawsuit, filed at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, claims an aide to Akpabio published a defamatory statement on Facebook. The statement allegedly implied Akpoti-Uduaghan’s focus as a lawmaker was superficial. Akpoti Uduaghan’s lawyer said, the defamation lawsuit is to minimize damage.
Victor Giwa, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s lawyer, stated the Facebook post was damaging and intended to harm his client’s reputation. The defamation lawsuit seeks a court declaration confirming the statement’s defamatory nature.
Akpoti-Uduaghan requests a permanent injunction preventing Akpabio and his associates from making further defamatory statements. She is also claiming N100 billion in general damages and an additional N300 million for legal costs.
A hearing date has not yet been set by the court. The case involves a dispute over a Senate seat reassignment.
