Alaafin of Oyo Begins Sacred Coronation Rites

Oyo – Get ready, Oyo! The ancient traditions are stirring as the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba AbdulAkeem Owoade, has commenced the 21-day traditional rites known as “Oro Opebi” starting March 7, 2025. These rites, steeped in history and meaning, will conclude on March 29, 2025.

Mr. Rotimi Osuntola, the Chief of Staff, emphasized the importance of these customs. “The Aláàfin of Oyo Kingdom has announced the start of ÒRÒ ÌPÊBÍ. This crucial tradition marks the final steps before His Majesty’s ascension to the revered throne,” he said. It’s a time of reflection, reverence, and reconnection to the roots of the Oyo people.

Town Under Curfew as Tradition Takes Center Stage

For the next 21 days, Oyo will observe a curfew from 8 pm to 6 am each night. Movement will be restricted as the town honors these sacred rites. Anyone found violating the curfew will be respectfully taken into custody and held until 7 am the following morning.

“ORO IPÊBI signifies a period of profound seclusion for the incoming Aláàfin. This is a time-honored tradition and it is crucial that everyone respects its significance,” the statement added. The spiritual energy of Oyo is focused and intense during this period.

Mark your calendars! The grand coronation for the new Alaafin is scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2025, in Oyo town. The public is asked to respect the traditions.

The rites are a window into the soul of the Oyo Kingdom.
