Abuja – All Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives members from Delta State have joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced the Delta PDP Reps defect during Tuesday’s plenary.
This move follows recent defections by former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and his successor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. Both also left the PDP for the APC at a stakeholders’ meeting in Asaba.
Reasons for Delta PDP Reps Defect
The lawmakers cited “protracted internal crises and divisions” within the PDP as their reason for leaving. Nicholas Mutu, a House member since 1999 and one of the defectors, said party turmoil hindered fulfilling campaign promises. The lawmakers stated they consulted constituents before they defect.
The defecting members are:
- Victor Nwokolo (Ika North East/Ika South)
- Julius Pondi (Burutu)
- Thomas Ereyitomi (Warri North/Warri South/Warri West)
- Nicholas Mutu (Bomadi/Patani)
- Ukodhiko Jonathan (Isoko North/Isoko South)
- Ezechi Nnamdi (Ndokwa/Ukwuani)
Implications for the PDP
These defections add to concerns about the PDP’s future stability. The party has seen several major exits recently. Former Senate President Bukola Saraki said the PDP would reposition, stating those who want to leave are free. PDP lawmaker Ikenga Ugochinyere previously warned two more governors and over 40 lawmakers might also leave the party. This Delta PDP Reps defect contributes to these concerns.
