Anambra Checkpoint Attack: 2 Gunmen Killed, Officer Dies

ANAMBRA – A joint security team shot dead two armed hoodlums on Thursday evening. The hoodlums had attacked a police checkpoint in Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. The checkpoint attack also resulted in one security officer’s death.

A community leader said the assailants “entered the community on Thursday evening and laid siege in a nearby bush, waiting to attack the checkpoint and their other targets.” A gun battle followed. One security officer was fatally wounded. A police operational vehicle was also set on fire. “Gunshots were fired for several hours, sending panic and tension to residents of the area,” the source stated.

Police Confirm Details, Begin Manhunt

Tochukwu Ikenga, Spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the checkpoint attack on Friday. He said the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the act.

“One of the Anambra joint security team in the late evening of May 15, 2025, resisted an attack by armed criminals at the security checkpoint in Isuofia, Aguata LGA,” Ikenga stated. “Two of the armed hoodlums were neutralised in the process. Regrettably, one of the security operatives was fatally wounded, while one of the security operational vehicles was burnt by the bandits.”

Manhunt Underway, Security in Isuofia Increased

Ikenga confirmed surviving attackers fled. They abandoned a Toyota Sienna vehicle. Security operatives are searching nearby bushes for any remaining suspects from the checkpoint attack.

“The Commissioner of Police has described the act as a test of the collective resolve of Ndi Anambra to work with security forces to dislodge the criminal elements in the state,” Ikenga said. He stated normalcy has returned to Isuofia. Additional armed personnel are deployed to secure the area.
