ISUANIOCHA, ANAMBRA STATE – A significant blow has been dealt to drug traffickers in Anambra State. The State Police Command successfully dismantled a major drug syndicate during a surprise dawn raid in Isuaniocha community, Awka North LGA, on Friday. This targeted Anambra drug bust resulted in the arrest of six suspects, including one woman.
Police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the success in a press release issued Saturday. He revealed that the operation was strategically carried out by the Special Cultism Squad, Obosi Sector, acting on solid intelligence. “Police operatives… busted into a drug trafficking network,” Ikenga stated. A quantity of dried leaves, suspected to be illicit drugs, along with other incriminating items, were seized during these Anambra police arrests. Among those taken into custody were 32-year-old Chinyere Onwuka and 36-year-old John Kennedy Onwuka.
“Drugs Are Oxygen for Crime”: Commissioner Vows Action After Anambra Drug Bust
Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, voiced his strong concern over the escalating rate of drug abuse among young people. He pinpointed substance abuse as a primary catalyst for criminal activities. “Drugs are the oxygen that drives most crimes and bad behaviour exhibited by individuals,” Orutugu declared. He directly linked the rise in social problems within the region to drug abuse. The Commissioner emphasized that police efforts would not stop at arrests. Proactive campaigns are planned to tackle the underlying causes of drug-related crime, with this recent Anambra drug bust serving as a clear signal of their intent.
Suspects Head to NDLEA; Police to Ramp Up Youth Advocacy
Following the successful Anambra police arrests, Tochukwu Ikenga detailed the next steps. The apprehended suspects will be transferred to the custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Awka. The NDLEA will then undertake a more thorough investigation and handle the prosecution process.
Furthermore, Ikenga announced that the Police Command intends to boost its Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV). This initiative is designed to educate young people about the severe dangers of drug use and the negative impact it has on society. “We are committed to saving our youths through advocacy and sustained action,” Ikenga affirmed, highlighting how operations like the Anambra drug bust fit into this larger strategy.
