Nigeria – Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar delivered sharp criticism against the Bola Tinubu administration Sunday. Atiku criticizes Tinubu and his government, stating they lack any significant achievements since taking office.
Accusations of Failed Leadership
Writing on his official X account, Atiku accused the administration of governing through “chaos and division.” He argued this is “the last refuge of the incompetent.” Atiku warned strongly, “…an incompetent captain does not only wreck his ship; he endangers the lives of everyone on board.” These remarks arise as public discontent grows within Nigeria.
Responding to Political Shifts
Atiku’s comments followed recent defections from his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Several key figures moved to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Defectors include Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and Representative Oluwole Oke.
Despite these shifts, Atiku downplayed their importance for future elections. He declared the real political contest is not simply party versus party. “Let us be clear,” Atiku stated, “It is Nigerians versus an administration that has plunged the nation into untold suffering.”
A Call for Unity Against Hardship
Highlighting Nigeria’s difficult economic conditions, Atiku criticizes Tinubu’s government as an “abysmal failure.” He urged citizens to unite against this perceived failure. Atiku cautioned against distractions like ethnic or religious divisions. “This moment is about collective survival,” he asserted. “The real enemy is not one another it is the Tinubu administration’s abysmal failure.”
He pointed to widespread suffering, high inflation, youth unrest, and lack of jobs as evidence of failed leadership.
Defending Democratic Engagement
Atiku also addressed criticism of his recent political activities. These activities included meetings with former President Muhammadu Buhari. Atiku defended these interactions, reinforcing his commitment to democratic rights.
“Freedom of association and expression are not optional in a democracy they are fundamental rights,” he explained. He described criticism of his meetings, while ignoring others’, as “hypocrisy.”
Meanwhile, PDP figure Chief Bode George offered his view on the Delta State defections. He called them routine political moves, suggesting they pose little danger to the PDP’s standing ahead of the 2027 elections. Link to related news report on Bode George’s comments
