Gusau – Twelve communities in Zamfara State are under intense pressure after armed bandits reportedly demanded a staggering N60 million levy. The demand escalates the already difficult security situation in northeastern Nigeria.
Conflict journalist Bakatsine revealed the threat on the social media platform X. According to his post, the bandits accuse residents in these areas of assisting Nigerian military forces during raids against the armed groups. The communities reportedly targeted include:
- Koloma
- Dan Hayin Zargado
- Zargado
- Dan Godabe
- Sabuwar Tunga
- Makini
- Bubaka
- Yelwa
- Bahwada
- Koda
- Manya
- Kabusu
Communities Fear Reprisal Over Levy
Bakatsine highlighted the danger faced by residents: “Bandits have imposed a N60m levy on 12 Zamfara communities… for allegedly aiding military raids. Residents fear attacks if they don’t pay.” This situation underscores the severe security challenges affecting rural life in northern Nigeria.
Fear of violent retaliation is high among the residents if the N60 million charge is not paid. Local reports suggest these threats are taken very seriously, recalling previous instances where failure to comply resulted in attacks. The imposition of such a large levy demonstrates the significant control these armed groups exert and signals an urgent need for effective government intervention to protect civilians.
