Biden Has Aggressive Prostate Cancer, Spread to Bones

WASHINGTON – Former U.S. President Joe Biden, 81, has been diagnosed with an advanced and aggressive prostate cancer that has spread to his bones. His personal office announced this in a statement on Sunday.

The diagnosis followed Mr. Biden’s report of “increasing urinary symptoms,” leading to a medical evaluation. “Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule,” his office’s statement said. Subsequent tests confirmed a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5). This score indicates a severe and fast-growing form of prostate cancer with a high likelihood of spreading, which has occurred in Mr. Biden’s case.

Hormone-Sensitive Cancer Offers Management Option

Despite the advanced stage of the Biden prostate cancer and its spread, his medical team noted a key factor for management. “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” the statement read.

Hormone-sensitive prostate cancers can often be managed for considerable time using androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). ADT works by lowering male hormones that fuel the cancer. Medical experts state that while such metastatic cancer is not curable, hormone therapy can extend life and help maintain quality of living. Mr. Biden’s doctors are reportedly considering ADT, targeted therapies, and possibly chemotherapy, depending on his response.

Family Involved in Treatment Decisions

The Biden family is closely involved as treatment options are considered. “The 81-year-old and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his medical team,” the office stated, highlighting the support around the former president.

Joe Biden has faced serious health issues before, including brain aneurysms. This diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer presents a new challenge. The announcement has drawn concern globally. The coming weeks will be important to see how Mr. Biden responds to treatment and to understand his long-term health outlook.
