London, UK – Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s former president, has died at age 82. His spokesperson, Garba Shehu, confirmed he passed away in a London clinic on Sunday after a long illness.
Prolonged Illness
Shehu announced the death in a post on X, stating: “The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.” The cause of death was reported as leukaemia. The illness led to several medical trips to the United Kingdom during his presidency.
A Leader’s Legacy
Buhari, a retired major general, led Nigeria during two periods. He was the military head of state from 1983 to 1985. He returned as a democratically elected president in 2015, serving two terms until 2023. His presidency focused on an anti-corruption campaign, national security, and economic policy.
Official Tributes
President Bola Tinubu called Buhari’s death a “painful loss for Nigeria and Africa.” An official statement confirmed that national flags will be flown at half-mast. The family will announce funeral arrangements.
