Vatican City – The 133 Catholic Cardinals have entered the Sistine Chapel. They will start the conclave to choose pope. The cardinals processed into the chapel, chanting the “Litany of the Saints” and “Veni Creator Spiritus.”
The Vatican said the cardinal-electors gathered first in the Pauline Chapel. A cross led their procession into the Sistine Chapel. The choir, priest assistants, the Secretary of the Conclave, and a designated cardinal followed.
Oath and Secrecy for Conclave to Choose Pope

Cardinals took a sacred oath, placing hands on the Gospels. They promised absolute secrecy about the ballots and the election. The Sistine Chapel doors are now closed and guarded by Swiss Guards. The cardinals have begun selecting the new Catholic Church leader. This conclave to choose pope follows Pope Francis’ death on April 21 and his burial on April 26.
Conclave Duration Unknown

How long they will last is uncertain. Past conclaves varied. Pope Benedict XVI’s 2005 election and Pope Francis’ 2013 election both took two days. Pope Pius XI’s 1922 election took five days and 14 ballots. Cardinals are expected to seek Holy Spirit guidance and prioritize Church needs.
