Court Blocks Attempt to Recall Senator

Lokoja, Nigeria – A Federal High Court in Lokoja has temporarily blocked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from processing petitions seeking to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

What’s Behind the Court Order?

Amidst growing efforts by groups in Kogi Central to remove the senator, the court issued an injunction on Thursday. The order specifically prohibits INEC from accepting petitions containing allegedly forged signatures.

The lawsuit was brought by Anebe Jacob Ogirima and four other registered voters. Their lawyer, Smart Nwachimere, Esq., successfully argued for the injunction. The case will return to court on May 6, 2025.

Action Collective, a pressure group, applauded the court’s decision. They described the recall effort as a politically motivated attack. “The order would further expose the impunity of some sponsored individuals behind the failed plot to recall Senator Natasha,” said Dr. Onimisi Ibrahim, the group’s coordinator.
