MAKURDI – Nine farmers died in deadly attacks in Benue State on Friday afternoon. Suspected herdsmen attacked two communities. This violence happened despite a security presence in the region, according to reports.
The first deadly attacks in Benue State occurred in Jato-Acka, Kwande Local Government Area. Eyewitnesses said over 20 armed assailants entered the community in daylight. They shot indiscriminately, killing six residents on the spot. The attackers then moved to Ayilamo, in Tombo ward, Logo Local Government Area. There, they killed three more people, including an officer of the state’s Livestock Guard.
Security Intervention and Lingering Insecurity
A community leader in Ayilamo, Tyovenda Igyutu, said soldiers and police operatives arrived quickly. He stated their fast response prevented more deaths and a complete overrun of the community. Mr. Igyutu praised the security agencies. However, residents remain fearful. In Jato-Acka, youth leader Lawrence Akerigba confirmed the attack. He said, “The invaders came around 4 p.m., shot several people, and set houses ablaze.” These Deadly Attacks in Benue State have left the communities in shock and fear.
These attacks highlight ongoing serious security problems in the region. Clashes between herders and farmers are frequent. These conflicts often lead to deaths and property destruction. Residents are calling for much more security to protect vulnerable communities. People in the area hope for peace and stability to return. For more updates on the security situation, see Benue Security Updates 2025. The federal government has previously stated it is aware of these long-standing attacks and has outlined responses. Neighboring Nasarawa State has also reportedly increased security at its border with Benue due to such violence.
The Wider Context of Farmer-Herder Tensions
The recent deadly attacks in Benue State are part of a larger pattern of farmer-herder conflicts in Nigeria. These disputes often concern resources like land for farming and grazing, and water. This violence has badly affected farming and food security in Benue, known as Nigeria’s “food basket.” Reports show these clashes have caused many people to leave their homes, lose their jobs, and a drop in farm output. Amnesty International has previously reported on security forces’ failures to prevent attacks or ensure justice for victims in past incidents in several states, including Benue.
