Abuja – Nigeria and Jamaica are exploring the possibility of establishing direct flights between the two countries. This initiative aims to strengthen their Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA).
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo and Jamaican Ambassador to Nigeria Lincoln Downer discussed this development. Downer highlighted the need for improved bilateral relations, especially regarding air services.
Enhancing Connectivity
Downer noted the increasing interest in Nigerian culture within Jamaica, specifically Afrobeat music and Nollywood films. This cultural exchange supports the need for better diplomatic and air connectivity. He stressed that direct flights should exist between the countries. Nigerians show interest in Jamaica, and Jamaicans demand Nigerian spices.
Keyamo expressed his support for the ambassador’s proposals. He plans to create a committee to speed up the BASA process. He offered to visit Jamaica, if needed, to finalize and sign the agreement in person. Jamaica currently relies on Trinidad and Tobago for air transport because it lacks a national carrier. The direct flights would solve a key logistical issue.
Downer added that after personal reflection he sees his ancestral home might be Nigeria.
