Rome – Medical staff considered stopping treatment for Pope Francis while he was hospitalized. The 88-year-old pontiff suffered a serious respiratory illness. Professor Sergio Alfieri, the lead doctor, revealed this information.
Alfieri told an Italian newspaper the critical moment occurred on February 28. He experienced a breathing crisis and inhaled vomit. Doctors had to decide whether to stop treatment or try aggressive therapies. Aggressive therapies risked damaging other organs. Alfieri said they chose to continue treatment.
Decision to Continue Treatment
The decision came via Pope Francis’ personal health assistant, Massimiliano Strappetti. Strappetti knows the Pontiff’s wishes regarding healthcare. “The Holy Father always decides,” Alfieri explained, noting the delegation to Strappetti. Strappetti reportedly told Alfieri, “Try everything, we won’t give up.”
He left Rome’s Gemelli hospital on March 23 after 38 days. This was his longest hospital stay since becoming pope 12 years ago. He experienced several breathing crises during the stay. Alfieri previously stated two crises put the pope’s life in danger.
Recovery and Future Plans
The Vatican provided detailed updates on Pope Francis’ condition during his hospital stay. Alfieri confirmed this was the pope’s request. “He asked us to tell him the truth,” Alfieri said.
He is now recovering at his Casa Santa Marta residence. He receives physiotherapy and has 24-hour medical support, including oxygen therapy. Doctors advised a gradual return to work. A planned state visit by Britain’s King Charles and Queen Camilla next month was postponed. Buckingham Palace stated medical advice suggested he needed more rest. Pope Francis continues personal prayer and has resumed signing documents.
