Government Response
The Ministry of Interior stated that the militants, from the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), set fire to the market and homes after killing civilians. The attack also injured 13 people, with four in critical condition. Niger declared a 72-hour national mourning period starting Saturday, March 23. Flags will be flown at half-mast.
Army Corps General Salifou Modi condemned the Niger massacre. He stated that the attack shows that “terrorists and their supporters do not uphold any religious ideals.” The government vowed to find the perpetrators. They promised that “these heinous crimes will not go unpunished.” The attack followed a Nigerien military airstrike that reportedly killed 45 ISGS fighters at a gold mining site. The Niger massacre highlights the ongoing threat of terrorism in the region.
