Edo State Police Confirmed the Kidnapped of Catholic Priest

Benin City – The Edo State Police Command confirms the kidnap of Rev. Father Philip Ekweli and Seminarian Peter Andrew. Suspected herders kidnapped them from St. Peter Catholic Church in Ivukwa community, Etsako East Local Government Area.

Police spokesman Moses Yamu stated the incident occurred on Monday. A rescue operation started immediately after a distress call.

Yamu said, “On 03/03/2025 at about 23:30 hours, the command received a call. Armed men, suspected to be herdsmen, stormed St. Peter Catholic Church. They kidnapped Rev. Father Philip Ekeli and Seminarian Peter Andrew.”

One suspect died during a gun fight. Police arrested four others: Murtala Ibrahim, Joshua Joseph, Sadiq Sheidu, and Sunday Bulus.

Police recovered shoes, a phone, a power bank, a dagger jacket, and cash. Commissioner of Police Betty Otimenyin sent more teams. They will ensure the victims’ release and catch the abductors.

Bishop Calls for Action

Bishop Gabriel Dunia of the Auchi Diocese expressed sadness. He cited frequent attacks and kidnappings of priests in the area.

He called on the government to address security problems in Edo North. “It has become a business centre for kidnappers. We are calling on the government to address these security challenges.”

Prayers for Release

The Catholic Diocese of Auchi asks for prayers. They seek the safe release of the kidnapped priest and seminarian.
