Abuja – Former football star John Fashanu, known for his days at Wimbledon and Aston Villa, is now in a legal fight. He’s suing the Nigeria Police for ₦200 million (£100,000), claiming they arrested him unlawfully and violated his rights.
John Fashanu, 62, along with his wife and lawyer, faced detention over a 22-acre land dispute. He now faces serious charges, including criminal conspiracy and intimidation. He strongly denies these charges, calling his treatment “inhuman.”
The £500,000 Question
This all started when investors reportedly put down over £500,000 for land. John Fashanu later discovered construction happening on that very land, seemingly protected by the police. When he and his lawyer tried to investigate, they were arrested. Even his wife was detained when she came with him.
The former FA Cup winner (with Wimbledon in 1988) insists this is a civil matter, not a criminal one. He’s also upset that the police took his phone.
John Fashanu isn’t backing down. He’s taken legal action against a dozen senior police officials. His lawyer confirms that bail conditions have been met, and everyone is waiting for the court’s decision. The case resumes on April 10, 2025.
