ABUJA – Nigeria’s Federal Government has reaffirmed its determination to combat flooding and desertification nationwide. George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, delivered this message. He stated President Bola Tinubu’s administration is working with all government levels on flood desertification mitigation.
Akume stated the administration’s focus. “This administration is particular about addressing the issues of flooding and other related issues like desertification. Mr. President is resolute towards implementing effective measures to curtail the menace,” Akume said.
Stronger Agency Teamwork for Lasting Solutions
The government is calling for increased collaboration among key agencies. This teamwork aims to develop and implement lasting solutions to these environmental threats. Improving flood desertification mitigation strategies is central to this effort.
Agency leaders recently detailed their specific actions and readiness. The Minister of Environment reported that 22 communities now have automated flood warning systems. The Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) explained its monitoring role. NASRDA uses geo-spatial technology to track water levels in Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam, a key task for early flood alerts.
Real-Time Warnings and Relief Efforts Ready
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is ready to provide timely information. Professor Charles Anosike, NiMet’s Director General, confirmed the agency’s ability to issue real-time weather forecasts and flood warnings. Such forecasts are vital for flood desertification mitigation.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) also stated its preparedness. Mrs. Zubaida Umar, NEMA’s Director General, assured that NEMA can deliver relief materials to communities hit by floods. The government stressed that close work and data sharing among these bodies are important for good results.
