Food Scarcity in Nigeria, Govt Says No

ABUJA – The Nigerian government has firmly rejected claims that the nation faces imminent food scarcity. Minister of State for Agriculture, Aliyu Abdullahi, stated this position Tuesday evening during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today program.

Abdullahi emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s early declaration of a state of emergency on food security, just two months into his presidency. This, he said, demonstrates the administration’s proactive approach. “Nigeria is not at risk of food scarcity; it has never been and, by the grace of God, never will be,” Abdullahi asserted.

The Minister explained that food scarcity, by definition, implies a complete lack of food availability. Nigeria, he clarified, is not experiencing this. He attributed concerns about food to broader economic factors.

The federal government, Abdullahi continued, is actively strengthening food security. Initiatives include managing national food silos and implementing buffer stock strategies across various states. He pointed to the abundance of food varieties available in Nigerian markets as evidence against widespread shortages.

Abdullahi also highlighted progress in domestic rice production, expressing confidence in Nigeria’s ability to meet its own demand.

While acknowledging consumer preference for some imported rice varieties, the Minister reiterated President Tinubu’s commitment to controlling food inflation and ensuring affordability. “President Tinubu is determined to ensure that every Nigerian can afford to eat whatever they choose,” he said. He said the president is committed to stabilizing prices.
