Fulani Settlement Attacked in Kwara: Homes Burned Over Banditry Claims

Kwara State – Violence broke out in Kemenji Village, Kaiama Local Government Area, on Thursday when local youths attacked a Fulani settlement. Several homes were burned during the assault, apparently driven by claims linking residents to local banditry.

Accusations Fuel Attack

Reports name Ibrahim Bature as involved in leading the group targeting the settlement. The attackers accused the Fulani residents of helping bandits responsible for recent kidnappings and killings that have worried the region. Sources said the mob acted quickly, setting fires to huts before fleeing. This sudden attack forced residents to run for safety.

Security Forces Intervene, Launch Investigation

Fast response from Nigerian Army troops, police, and other security agencies stopped the situation from getting worse. Authorities confirmed their intervention brought calm back to the village. A search is now underway for Bature and others said to have joined the Kwara village violence. Officials stated this operation aims to arrest those responsible and stop future vigilante actions. Residents were reminded to use official channels and not take law into their own hands.

Residents Recount Fear, Call for Calm

Eyewitnesses described the fear during the incident. “Smoke was everywhere, people ran – it was terrifying,” said Aisha Bello, a Kemenji trader. “Many of us hid until soldiers arrived.” Another resident, Yusuf Garba, noted the community’s frustration with insecurity but condemned the violence. “People are angry about the killings, but this attack only causes more problems,” he said. “This area needs peace.” Authorities repeated their commitment to addressing crime and ensuring safety for all communities.
