FUOYE VC Sues Staff, Papers for Defamation

Ado Ekiti – The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Abayomi Fasina, has taken legal action against a female staff member, Mrs. Folasade Adebayo, and two online newspapers. Alleging defamation of his character and reputation, the FUOYE VC sues for a substantial N250 million in damages.

Professor Fasina asserts that the defendants acted maliciously by circulating an audio recording and publishing associated reports which, he claims, have significantly tarnished his public image. According to the statement of claim filed in court, “the audio recording and related publication by the defendants…contained baseless and malicious allegations of sexual harassment and victimisation, clearly intended to tarnish my reputation.”

Reputational Harm and Reliefs Sought in FUOYE VC Sues Case

The Vice Chancellor detailed the impact of these alleged actions, stating they led to considerable reputational damage. He described receiving numerous phone calls, WhatsApp messages, and visits from concerned colleagues and family members anxious about the circulated materials. Professor Fasina contends that the defamatory words implied criminality, professional misconduct, and a general lack of moral standing on his part, forming the core reasons why the FUOYE VC sues.

Among the reliefs sought from the court, Professor Fasina is asking for:

  • A formal declaration that the audio recording and its circulation constitute slander.
  • An award of exemplary or aggravated damages to compensate for the harm.
  • A court order compelling the defendants to publish a full retraction and a public apology.

Court Proceedings and What Lies Ahead

The lawsuit has been officially filed at the Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti Division. In addition to damages, Professor Fasina is also seeking a perpetual injunction. This legal order would permanently restrain the defendants from publishing or circulating any similar defamatory materials in the future. The court will now deliberate on the validity of the claims presented and the appropriateness of the reliefs sought by the claimant. The outcome of this high-profile case is likely to have notable implications for the university community and all parties involved.
